GOT MOM'S MILK?! Breastfeeding can benefit both you and your baby!  If you
are pregnant, please consider breastfeeding.  If you have questions or need
help, see your hospital's lactation consultant (or find an independent one) or
visit one of the many breastfeeding resources on the web! A lactation
consultant and the La Leche League (and for me, the Breastfeeding
message board on Parent's Place,
www.parentsplace.com/messageboards)
are invaluable during your entire nursing career.  It's unfortunate that so many
doctors (yours and your baby's) do not know much about breastfeeding and
give incorrect and sometimes dangerous advice. Please always check with
LLL or your lactation consultant if something doesn't "sound right" to you.

BENEFITS: We have seen the benefits of breastfeeding over and over again.
Just a few...increased immunity to illness (baby), no washing bottles/mixing
formula, may delay menstruation for you (birth control), night feedings are
readily available, great source of comfort, super "clear liquid" for baby (very
easily and quickly digested) during illness (vomiting, etc.), wonderful way to
bond with your baby, ...

MEDICATIONS: Yes, even mom's taking medications can usually breastfeed,
most medications are either okay to use or there may be an alternative that is
okay.  Many doctors and pharmasists are not aware of which meds really are
okay and may give you the ill-advice to stop breastfeeding or pump.  Please
know that this is not usually necessary.  Your lactation consultant will be able
to give you accurate information on what meds are okay to use while
breastfeeding.  There is also a great book called Medications & Mother's Milk
-- an invaluable resource on medications for you and your doctor.  Click here

You Can Still Breastfeed, by Dr. Jack Newman. And here to read Is
this Safe When Breastfeeding? (lots of info about meds/surgery/health
problems while breastfeeding).

Above all else, if you have any troubles, seek support and help!  Most
mom's can breastfeed when given the proper support and help and with a
strong determination.  Problems will occur, but you can work through
them!
We made it through the difficulties of nursing a preemie, jaundice,
surgery for mom, medications, thrush, . . . and we happily breastfed for 2 1/2
years!  YOU CAN DO IT!

We highly recommend slings as a "new baby necessity"!
Please visit this site for a great sling comparison.

Here's our opinions and what worked/didn't work for us:

I recommend the Over The Shoulder Baby Holder from about 3 mo to 2
years or so.  The padding seemed too much with a preemie, but is so
comfortable with a slightly older baby/toddler.  It's so well constructed, very
durable.

We also used the Maya Wrap (sling) from around 3 mo-8 or 9 mo and it
worked great as well.   There's no padding, so I found it was getting to be
not as comfortable as the OTSBH as she got older and the metal ring cut
into me a bit too much.  If I had the Maya at the beginning, it probably would
have worked great when Olivia was so small.

We used a typical front carrier for the first 3 mo and it wasn't exactly
comfortable (I had washclothes under the shoulder straps even with a little
bitty baby) but was the only thing I had at the time.  I wouldn't recommend
the regular ones, but some people really like the Baby Bjorn (although I
haven't heard that it lasts a long time).

I'm looking forward to trying a fleece pouch and a sling made out of stretchy
knit material for our next baby -- I've heard great things about both materials.

Above all else, if you have a carrier/sling that isn't working for you (isn't
comfortable, too complicated, whatever) try calling the company to see if
there's anything you could do differently to make it work. One common
problem I see a lot is people wearing their babies too low.  Your baby
needs to be as high and tight to you as possible (it allows the weight to be
distributed more evenly and is also safer and more comfortable for your
baby).   If that doesn't work, try another type of carrier/sling.  Carrying
(wearing) your baby is so important, having a sling/carrier that works for you
will make it so much easier!   Yes, even you can use a sling!
