Endometriosis is a physically and emotionally painful disease -- there is no
cure. Endometriosis is not a well known disease, even in the medical
community. Correct public information in the media and through word of
mouth will help bring about better care and more research for improved
medical treatment and some day a cure.
With endometriosis, tissue that normally lines the uterus is found in other
parts of the body, most often on other organs in the abdominal cavity such as
the ovaries, tubes, ligaments, pelvic cavity lining, bladder, bowel, and outside
of the uterus. These growths grow and bleed each month and cause pain,
infertility, and other problems. Endometriosis can only be positively
diagnosed during surgery, usually a laparoscopy.
Some of the symptoms include:
-severe menstrual pain
-pelvic and/or abdominal pain apart from menses
-back pain
-painful intercourse
-painful bowel movements
-"Irritable Bowel Syndrome" symptoms
-fatigue
-abdominal bloating
-infertility
-other problems depending on where the endometriosis is
Not all women have obvious symptoms while others suffer daily with the
pain of this disease.
For more information, the following websites discuss endometriosis and
various treatments including medical and surgical techniques. These are
a good starting point on learning more about this life altering disease.
